The Base chakra provides raw energy and is directly related to our instinctual nature. Our vitality, vigour and overall level of raw physical energy is provided by this centre. The natural colour associated here is red, which is at the dense end of the light spectrum.

Physically the chakra governs lower digestive functions, bladder and bowel functions, sexual activity, etc. If this chakra is damaged tiredness, poor sleeping patterns, eating disorders, sexual dysfunction and waste elimination problems (like constipation) can occur.

This chakra also maintains the health of the skeletal structure and can be damaged by bone breaks anywhere in the body.

Since the Base chakra governs all of our instincts you can see that damage here will also have extreme emotional effects. Rage and anger are common when the centre is irratic in function, as can be episodes of violence. When it is blocked extreme depression bordering on suicidal behaviour can occur. This chakra is depressed by alcohol and certain psychotropic drugs and will therefore suffer if consumed.
